The Persian alphabet

Persian (Farsi) is written right-to-left in a 32-letter alphabet — a version of the Arabic script with four extra letters (پ چ ژ گ). Short vowels usually aren't written, which is why every example in the app shows a romanization underneath. Here are all the letters with their names and sounds.

Letters

Shown in their standalone form. Most letters also connect to their neighbours and change shape a little depending on position in the word.

Long vowels are carried by letters — ا (â), و (u/o/v), ی (i/e/y). The short vowels (a, e, o) are normally left out of writing and learned from context — the romanization fills them in for you.
